Hortifarm is a small island of 8.7 hectare in Noonu Atoll being developed as an experimental island test the viability of commercial scale agriculture in selected products like melons, tomatoes, capsicum and herbs in the Maldivian eco-system.
The island will use the most modern and efficient environment friendly technologies and determine which agricultural products could be commercially harvested and marketed in the small resource depleted logistically challenging Maldivian Environment.
Environment friendly technologies and innovations that include tunnel cultivation, fertigation and drip irrigation systems will be studied and customized for the island environment.
Additionally Post-harvest technology including grading & specialized packaging will be implemented. The island will also develop temperature controlled packaging and storage facilities such the products reach the market with maximum freshness and shelf life.
The developers are determined to invest to determine which agricultural products offer commercial viability and use the experience and skill base to setup a sustainable, commercially viable production, post harvest and marketing value chain for the Maldives and beyond
Carpenter
Carpenter is responsible to construct, erect, install and renovate structures made of wood ranging from kitchen cabinets to building frameworks.
DUTIES
- Read blueprints, drawings and sketches
- Take measurements and calculate the size and amount of material needed
- Asses the quality of woods and other materials
- Able to use all types of carpentry electrical and hand tools
- Cut, shape and smooth wood according to measurements
- Build window frames, doors, staircases and frame buildings by using pre-constructed items
- Lay out floorings, roofing or drywalls ensuring they are leveled and compatible
- Make building wooden roof structures and install roof sheets
- Make, carve and assemble furniture, cabinets, shelves and other items and install them where designated
- Inspect places and conduct repairs or maintenance
- Build scaffolding and other construction structures
QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
- knowledge and skills of various carpentry works including shuttering work
- 5 years of work experience in carpentry work
- Willing to work on Hortifarm Island
- Read, write and speak in English

Roles and Responsibilities
1) Assist the Manager to carryout day-to-day operations of Hortifarm
2) Ensure all works at tunnels are carried out according to set procedures and guidelines.
3) Ensure cleaning of the tunnels and regular repair and maintenance of the tunnels & drip systems
4) Organize weekly harvesting, sorting, and packaging of harvests.
5) Ensure watering and fertilizing of open field plants and keeping the fields clean all the time
6) Prepare & maintain reports including harvest forecasts, weekly harvest, etc.
7) Maintain stocks of seeds, fertilizers, bio-pesticides, and tools by placing timely orders to Fantasy
8) Maintain and control the inventory of the project.
9) Arrange with technicians for servicing of machineries and equipment and keep them in running condition.
10) Arrange with technicians for regular servicing of generators and desalination plant.
11) Ensure all the vessels are properly managed adhering to safety standards by captains
12) Arrange maintenance of buildings and infrastructure on regular basis.
13) Keep the island clean all the time.
14) Place orders for staff food and other materials on weekly basis and maintain stock
15) Organize to send items to Male and tally items received from Male.
16) Keep the staff accommodation, kitchen, and dining room clean and tidy all the time.
17) Ensure employers follow the rules and procedures and take necessary action to those who do not follow them.
18) Identify and resolve issues and conflicts among the staff.
19) Carry out other tasks relating to project expansion and development.
20) Maintain staff attendance and other administrative work.
Undertake and carryout any other duties/responsibilities assigned
REQUIREMENTS
1. University Degree
2. 5 or more years work experience in a farming project
3. 3 years work experience in a supervisory role.
4. Willing to stay on Hortifarm Island
5. Fluent in English
6. Computer literate (Microsoft package)
