An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as a consultant Paediatrician in a newly build and newly established Kurdistan Children Hospital (KCH) in the Erbil city which is the capital of the Kurdistan region in the north of Iraq. We are looking to recruit 6 Consultant paediatric colleagues to join a team of acute consultant paediatricians based at KCH. The post will attract 48 working hours/week, inclusive of the on call duties. Post 1 and 2 will involve general Paediatricians with special interest in neonatology, and therefore an experience in neonatal intensive care (NICU) is essential while posts 3, 4, 5 and 6 will be predominantly within general paediatrics and experiences in paediatric high dependency and Paediatric Intensive Units (PICU) are essential. We would also welcome other special interests in other sub-specialities including Diabetes and Endocrinology, Paediatric Cardiology and Paediatric gastro-enterology because of the utmost need in developing these subspecialties in the city of Erbil in general and in KCH in particular. These post needs colleagues who are enthusiastic, willingness to work hard and flexibly and interested not only in delivering the services but developing them further in close collaboration with the rest of the medical and the nursing team.
Colleagues with neonatal intensive care experience will initially share the on call duties with the general Paediatric colleagues during the OHH/week-ends. Therefore, colleagues with experiences in both neonatal and Paediatric intensive cares are highly desirable. However the intention is to move progressively towards split rotas for neonatology, general paediatrics and Paediatric HDU/PICU in the future.

Duties of the posts

• Out-patient clinics running mainly general paediatrics and once/week speciality clinic if a colleague is experienced in any other sub-specialities mentioned above.
• Participation with existing consultants in the acute on-call rota for general, neonatal paediatrics, HDU/PICU and CAU. However, this is expected to change as the department eventually moves towards separate rotas for neonatology and general paediatrics. When fully operational and to improve the continuity of care there is a plan to move toward a “consultant of the week” system during which routine out-patient clinics are cancelled for the colleague who is on call. In addition and there will also be a “neonatologist on take” who has daytime responsibility for the neonatal unit Sunday to Thursday noting that the week-end days are Fridays and Saturdays.
• Teaching and supervision of the junior colleagues.
