Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Work within customer design team designing aircraft DC and AC generators
Support other design related activities as required from time to time by the customer

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITIES
The production of Design Schemes, including CAD models, assemblies and 2D drawings for concept and detail designs of electrical machines.
To carry out design calculations such as interference fits, thermal growths, hoop and tensile stresses, thread loadings and tolerance analysis to support concept and detail designs.
To liaise closely with other project team members such as stress, manufacturing, sourcing and configuration with respect to new designs or design changes.
Operate in accordance with the customer Product Introduction Process (PIP) and lead the necessary gateway reviews. Be able to provide PIP process guidance to more junior designers.
The production of design assurance documentation including ERN's and Design Reports
The production and maintenance of design monitors spreadsheets such as performance, cost and weight.
The production and maintenance of parts lists as defined by latest CAD assemblies.
To agree monthly milestone targets to support project needs and timescales. Monitor progress and ensure satisfactory milestone compliance.
To support the Lead Engineer to ensure the technical integrity of the product and that it meets all performance, reliability, cost and safety requirements.
Provide support to other team members in completion of their activities

COMPETENCIES & SKILLS 
A Mechanical, Automotive or Aeronautical Engineering degree or equivalent qualification
Experience in Rotating machinery design
Clear verbal and written communication
Ability to work under pressure to meet program deadlines
Extensive Design experience esp. rotating equipment, shaft, bearings seals, structures etc.
Experienced in NX
Some experience and understanding of ANSYS Workbench for stress analysis would be desirable
Good working knowledge of MS Software i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project.
Knowledge of electrical machines (electrical motors and generators)
Must have an understanding of engineering materials and production methods relevant to them.
Must be able to produce designs with consideration of design to cost, and ease of manufacture and assembly.
Good time management, proactive with an ability to prioritise.
Must have the ability to plan work efficiently to meet agreed monthly milestone tasks.

Ability to engage engineers and experts from different disciplines to learn and deliver

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
BE/ ME/ MTech in Mechanical Engineering
Very experienced in hand calculations for sizing of fits, tolerance stack, sizing of mechanical elements such as shafts, fasteners etc.
Very experienced in NX for 3D modelling and drafting
Experience in GD&T
Customer Focus - Ability to build and develop Customer & Supplier relationships
Organisational Agility
Problem solving ability
Logical Thinking
Effective Time management
