General Manager for Uganda Tea Corporation, Uganda



We have been a leading tea producer and exporter in Uganda for over 20 years. With three estates situated within a 75km radius situated near to Kampala the capital of Uganda, the company has more than 2,000 hectares of land area of which about 1,200 hectares is currently utilised for tea growing with support forestation and food crops being grown.

The company has two tea factories within the three estates and also has a retail factory outlet. Apart from its own tea estates, the company has an established supply of green leaf from established out-growers providing increased supply to its factories.

Close to Lake Victoria, in the rolling hills approaching 2,600ft altitude, the company's tea estates have a remarkable soil and atmospheric conditions which remain a key source of the company's strength, this has earned the company a high reputation for its tea under its three estate names.

From a mere 200,000 kilos of production in the early 1980's, to the currently increasing production of over 3.5M kilos of tea per annum, The company growth is due to its committed work force and sound industry practices; the permanent and contract workforce is currently about 1,700 workers. 

The company is one of the leading corporations in the private sector in Uganda contributing more than 10% of Uganda's national tea production. Over 80% of the company's production is exported, earning valuable foreign exchange for the country.

Employee welfare and social responsibilities remain high on the company's list of priorities, with contribution to the basic needs, namely, food, social security, housing, water, health and junior schooling facilities of its manpower being high on the list of priorities. 

The company is presently undergoing key changes keeping in line with fluctuating market demands and additional alternative crop opportunities. With three production lines at one of the factories running at full capacity, the company is in the process of upgrading facilities and equipment - which is expected to immensely increase the production quality and capacity.

    • Overseeing the entire operations of the estate from field production through to export. 
    • Overseeing the use of soil and crop science to maximize the sustainable returns possible.
    • Developing and negotiating contracts with out-growers to ensure cost-effective and efficient supply of high-quality tea.
    • Carrying out a cost analysis and reviewing with the intention to optimize resources.
    • Ensuring timely preparation and submission of the company's annual budget.
    • Maintaining sound relations with staff at all levels and ensuring adherence to company policy and staff regulations. 
    • Developing and implementing a product development strategy for teas including improving current products, re-positioning existing offerings, introduction of new lines and creating Fair-trade and other accredited products. 
    • Reviewing and improving the supply chain processes.
    • Ensuring the sound liaison and development of relationships with external stakeholders including Government departments, suppliers and contractors.
    • Proven hands on experience and track record: Agricultural crop management and production (Tea/Coffee).
    • Sound team management skills; able to effectively marshal the abilities of the Senior Management team behind a cohesive business plan within a large operationally complex business.
    • Ability to manage and motivate a large workforce team 
    • Basic accounting qualifications and sound computing skills.
    • Good communication skills - both verbal and written.
    • Experience in writing reports, cost and budget management.
