Position: GEOTECHNICAL DAM ENGINEER

Experience in geotechnical investigation, engineering analysis and design of embankment dams is essential. Training will be provided and further education is encouraged.
The role includes participation in a broad range of dam engineering design projects (including water storage dams and tailings dams), specifically geotechnical investigations and embankment dam engineering, from concept development through to detailed design and construction support. 

Typical dam engineering projects will include: 
  • Investigation and condition assessment of existing dams.
  • Scoping and undertaking geotechnical investigations, including interpretation of foundation conditions and characterising the engineering properties of foundation and construction materials.
  • Concept design development for embankment dams (water storage), including tailings dams.
  • Detailed design studies for dam upgrade works and new dam projects for embankment dams including tailings dams.
  • Engineering input to the selection and specification of dam construction materials including earthfill, engineered filter and rockfill materials.
  • Documenting the engineering designs, inspection reports and surveillance works undertaken.
  • Preparation of detailed design drawings and technical specifications for construction.
  • Construction support services including inspection of works, evaluation of quality control and quality assurance data and construction reporting.

Responsibilities: 

Technical 
  • The Dam Engineer will be responsible for the technical performance for a broad range of dam engineering projects and responsibilities shall include:
  • Manage engineering tasks / projects to achieve compliance with the client brief, relevant legislation and management plans. Project direction and support will be provided by Technical Director and Associate Director level engineer within the Dams group.
  • Striving to ensure tasks are completed in a timely manner, that client objectives are met and takes accountability for results.
  • Geotechnical characterisation, interpretation, analysis and reporting.
  • Prepare project documentation including reports, project communications, and design drawings to a high professional standard.
  • Generally supporting project teams in achieving stated goals within the Dams team but also to the various business lines within the Melbourne office and the Asia-Pacific region.

Project Management
  • The Dam Engineer will be responsible for the project management of dam engineering projects as follows:
  • Manage tasks / projects such that budgets are met and that clients are invoiced on a monthly basis or as otherwise dictated by contract terms.
  • Adhere to AECOM Business Management Systems, Quality Management Systems and OH&S Systems.
  • Liaison with client personnel to effectively understand the context of project requirements whilst ensuring that advice and recommendations provided to clients is objective.
  • Compliance with AECOM and client OH&S policies and relevant legislation

Business Development 
The Dam Engineer will actively participate in Business Development activities including:
Preparation of water engineering sector proposals and tenders.
Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with clients.

Development and Leadership of Others 
The Dam Engineer shall assist in the development of the skills and human resources of the Water Engineering Group. Responsibilities will include:
Participate in internal AECOM training and development programmes including project management certification.
Provide mentoring to other team members on technical matters.

Qualifications 
A degree in Civil Engineering with emphasis in Geotechnical Engineering (Essential)
Drivers licence (Essential)
Skills 
Strong geotechnical engineering skills including: 
Planning and scoping geotechnical investigations
Scheduling laboratory testing and evaluating results
Evaluation and interpretation of geological models
Characterisation of engineering properties of materials

Analytical experience including: 
Stability analysis
Settlement analysis
Deformation analysis.
Design skills relating to all aspects of embankment dam engineering including: 
Options development and evaluation.
Embankment design including geometric layout.
Foundation works including grouting, cut off walls, foundation preparation
Temporary works design including cofferdams, diversion channels, retention systems, dewatering works
Selection and specification of dam construction materials including earthfill, filter and rockfill materials.
Associated infrastructure works including surface treatments, slope stabilisation works, foundation design for small structures, roads, drainage and general landform design.

Experience in preparation of various construction documents including: 
Design drawings
Technical specifications
Construction cost estimates from pre-feasibility level through to detailed cost estimates.
Excellent report writing and verbal communication skills including:
Design Memos for specific task outcomes.
Design Reports
Construction Reports
Monthly Project Management Reports
Well-developed planning and organisational skills

Knowledge 
Civil engineering and civil design
Geotechnical engineering
Analytical skills (i.e., slope stability, settlement analyses) including good capability with geotechnical software (i.e., Slope/W, Seep/W, gINT)
Knowledge of the capabilities and application of numerical modelling is preferable.
Occupational Health & Safety.
Knowledge of Microsoft Suite of programs essential.

Experience 
5 to 10 years experience in geotechnical engineering (Essential)
Previous experience in dam embankment design
Previous experience with geotechnical investigations (including site supervision), interpretations, and report preparation.
